Immobilisers
WHAT
ARE IMMOBILISERS?
They are electronic devices which activate automatically when you turn off your engine, which cut 2 or 3 circuits i.e. starter motor, fuel pump.
WHEN DO YOU NEED ONE?
They are an effective deterrent on car theft, by preventing unauthorised starting of your vehicles engine. Also they may entitle you to a discount on your vehicle insurance.
HOW DO YOU DEACTIVATE TO ENABLE YOU TO START YOUR ENGINE?
There are various types of dis-arming all based around the same technology. The two most popular are Touch Key and Transponder.
Touch Key is when you will have a receptacle mounted on the dash, near the ignition key, where you touch your immobiliser key prior to turning on the ignition.
Transponder is basically an invisible method whereby you will have a TAB on your key ring. When you put your key in the ignition and start the engine, the transponder automatically send it's code, which allows you to start your vehicle.
WHICH TYPE OF IMMOBILISER SHOULD I HAVE?
Always insisit on an insurance approved (Thatcham Category 2) system and have it installed by a VSIB (Vehicle Security Installation Board) approved installer, in this way you can be sure you are having the best system and the best installation possible.
